Dal Fry

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup toor dal
  • 3½ cups water
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 dried red chilli, broken
  • few curry leaves
  • pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 green chilli, slit
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves)

Steps

  1. Pressure cook toor dal with 3½ cups water for 5 whistles, until soft.
  2. In a kadai, heat ghee and splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilli, curry leaves, and asafoetida.
  3. Add onion, ginger garlic paste, and green chilli. Sauté until onion softens.
  4. Add turmeric, chilli powder, and coriander powder. Sauté on low flame.
  5. Add tomato and cook until soft and mushy.
  6. Add the cooked dal and salt. Mix well.
  7. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until the dal turns smooth and absorbs the flavors.
  8. Stir in garam masala, chopped coriander leaves, and crushed kasuri methi.
  9. Serve hot with jeera rice or ghee rice.
