Lángos (Hungarian Fried Dough)

Ingredients

  • 500 g flour
  • 3 dl milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 20 g yeast
  • 250 g potatoes
  • salt

Steps

  1. Place the flour in a bowl and keep it in a warm place.
  2. Warm 1.5 dl of the milk, mix with sugar, and crumble in the yeast to activate it.
  3. Boil the potatoes, mash them, and season with salt. Mix with the warmed flour.
  4. Add the activated yeast mixture and the remaining warm milk. Knead into a semi-firm dough. Work it well, dust with flour, and let it rise until tripled in size.
  5. Divide the risen dough into small balls, place on a floured board, and let rest for 15 minutes.
  6. Stretch each fist-sized ball flat and fry in hot oil until golden brown on both sides.
  7. Serve topped with sour cream and cheese, or with a garlic sauce made from oil, sour cream, grated garlic, and salt.
