Homemade Chili

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained
  • 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes, with juices
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly cracked

Steps

  1. Cook diced onion and minced garlic in olive oil in a large pot over medium heat until soft and translucent.
  2. Add ground beef and sauté until fully browned.
  3. Add drained kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, water, and all seasoning ingredients. Stir until combined.
  4. Cover and simmer over low heat for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, then serve hot with desired toppings.

Notes

Flavor improves the longer it simmers.
