Old Fashioned Tuna Noodle Casserole

Ingredients
- 12 oz egg noodles
- 2 (5 oz) cans tuna, drained
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 3/4 cup frozen peas
- 5 tablespoons butter
- 8 oz sliced fresh mushrooms
- 7 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 5 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
Steps
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Grease a 13x9 inch baking dish with oil.
- Cook egg noodles in salted boiling water until al dente, about 1 minute less than package directions. Drain and set aside.
- Drain tuna and break apart with a fork in a small bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and set aside.
- In a large pot, melt 5 tablespoons butter over medium heat and sauté mushrooms until softened.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in milk, then add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring, until sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
- Add cooked noodles, tuna, and peas to the sauce; mix well to combine.
- Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
- Top with the buttered panko breadcrumbs.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until bubbly and topping is golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
