Old Fashioned Tuna Noodle Casserole

Ingredients

  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • 2 (5 oz) cans tuna, drained
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup frozen peas
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 8 oz sliced fresh mushrooms
  • 7 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 5 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 13x9-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook egg noodles in salted boiling water until al dente, about 1 minute less than package directions. Drain and set aside.
  3. Drain tuna and break apart with a fork in a small bowl.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with melted butter; set aside.
  5. Melt 5 tablespoons butter in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat and cook mushrooms until softened.
  6. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  8. Season sauce with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  9. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  10. Add cooked noodles, tuna, and frozen peas to the sauce; mix until well combined.
  11. Pour mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  12. Sprinkle buttered panko breadcrumbs evenly over the top.
  13. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown on top.
  14. Let cool slightly before serving.
