Jamaican Sorrel Drink

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh sorrel
  • 5 oz fresh ginger, sliced or grated
  • 10 pimento berries (allspice)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup white rum
  • 1 cup red label wine
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 6 cups water

Steps

  1. Wash the sorrel thoroughly and remove any unwanted particles.
  2. In a pot, combine the ginger, cinnamon stick, pimento berries, and water.
  3. Bring to a boil over high heat and boil for 3 minutes.
  4. Add the sorrel to the pot and boil for another 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Turn off the heat and let steep overnight, or at least 12 hours.
  6. Strain the mixture well.
  7. Sweeten to taste with sugar.
  8. Stir in the rum and wine, then serve over ice.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and wine. Dried sorrel can be substituted for fresh.
