How to Dye Eggs with Onion Skins

Ingredients

  • 10 eggs
  • skins from 10 large onions
  • 2.5 liters water
  • 200 ml red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • olive oil
  • paper towels

Steps

  1. Add the onion skins to a medium-sized pot.
  2. Pour in the water and vinegar, then add the salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for about 40 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Wash the eggs and dry them with a kitchen towel.
  5. Using a tablespoon, carefully lower the eggs one by one into the dye.
  6. Return the pot to the heat and simmer over medium heat for about 30 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and let the eggs rest in the pot for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Transfer the eggs to a plate and let them dry completely without rubbing.
  9. Once dry, put some olive oil on a paper towel and rub each egg gently until shiny.
